5 Steps To Remove Wattbike Pedal Cages

August 8, 2016 by EnnisP 8 Comments

Remove Wattbike pedal cages.

Only Two Steps
To Reinstall Cages

The newer Wattbikes are fitted with multi-pedals making it possible to use three different pedal styles: road clips, SPD’s and cages. Whatever shoes you have will work.

The best part about that is you can use the same shoes on the Wattbike as you use on your outdoor bike. You don’t need to spend money buying or setting up a second pair of shoes.

The drawback is, if you’re shoes have road style clips, the cages must be removed first. They use the same receptor.

That doesn’t sound like a big deal until you try to remove the cages for the first time. I eventually figured it out but not without making a idiot of myself and getting a little banged up.

To avoid the embarrassment and the bruises, follow these steps:

Step 1:

Stand on the side of the bike and raise the pedal crank to the upper most position. Once the crank is in position, rotate the pedal till the toe is pointing downward.

Step 2:

Brace your foot against the back end of the bike frame. This will stabilize the bike when you pull on the pedal. If not braced, the bike will slide.

Step 3:

Grab the toe end of the cage with both hands. The closer to the toe, the better the leverage.

Step 4:

Pull gently against the cage sideways – away from the bike – to remove any slack.

Step 5:

Holding the tension, give the cage a quick jerk and it should snap right out.

Getting the cage out is the hard part, but what happens if you want to use the cages and they’ve been removed? Two steps and you’re good to go.

Step 1:

Fit pedal cage onto your shoe snugly.

Step 2:

Using your weight to apply pressure, clip cage into pedals.

It’s that simple.

Thanks a lot for posting this – have been trying to figure this out without looking like an idiot. Hopefully you’ve saved me the indignity.

Understand completely. I did the idiot thing trying to figure it out myself. Got a few scrapes, bruises and weird looks. 🙂

You can find information on https://wattbike.com/us. I believe they run around $2600.00.

They are manufactured in the UK but I believe they are available in the states. The one I used was in a gym in South Africa. It is an incredibly advanced bike. The bike measures power output and the computer provides several test and training options.

If you don’t need all the bells and whistles, though, a MYXFitness is also a great bike. I have one and my wife and I both use it. We don’t make use of their training plans but we are both experienced and fairly motivated. The bike is priced very fairly and is very sturdy. All bikes will need servicing to time to time but the sturdiness of the MYX is encouraging.

Great post. Thank you! I use a wattbike in a gym and couldn’t figure this out. None of my road shoes will take a MB cleat so you’ve save me a lot of hassle.

    Thanks again.

    Good question, Catherine.

I’m assuming you’re talking about the smaller metal clips commonly used on mountain bikes. If that’s the case, the best clips are the Shimano brand. Other brands are either difficult to clip in or out. Shimano is usually a bit more expensive but they are the gold standard for SPD’s.

I normally use three holed cleats (triangle shaped) and the only brand I’ve used so far is Look. They work fine.

Very helpful post thank you. Out of interest which spd l cleats work best with the wattbike pedals as my brother used it today with his road shoes and couldn’t clip out?
