Eye Witnesses To Heaven – Are They Genuine?

February 24, 2011 by EnnisP 2 Comments

Heaven Is For Real

There are two categories of people that refuse to believe eye witness reports of heaven.

One is the atheist-type who rejects any idea of an afterlife that includes heaven and God.

But, since atheists have very few standard beliefs and they suggest so many different afterlife possibilities it would take too long to consider their ideas.

We will save them and their concepts for another post.

The other category of individual who refuses to accept any eye witness reports of heaven is the conservative Christian. A few passages in the Bible seem to stand in the way so they approach the topic incredulously, intending to discredit the idea.

There are, of course, all kinds of so called death experience tales being pushed, many of which are strange and unusual to say the least but there are also reasons to expect temporary glimpses of heaven on the odd occasion.

Heaven is never given geographic coordinates but we know it isn’t far away. Paul said to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, so our last breath on earth is the doorway to heaven and the transition is instantaneous.

The after-life is so close we shouldn’t be surprised visions of heaven or hell overlap our last minuets in this world.

Rather than ignore the subject and leave it open for shady suggestions we should explore the topic thoroughly from a biblical perspective. A fair look at the key passages may clarify the issue. [Read more…] about Eye Witnesses To Heaven – Are They Genuine?

Heaven Assumed In The Bible

Heaven Is For Real by Todd Burpo

Whatever You Expect After Death
Requires Faith

Some people don’t accept heaven as a reality. They have never seen it, touched it or visited so they reject the idea.

But, the reality of heaven is not based on personal experience. Like the outer edge of the universe, a place no one has seen or visited, there is good reason to believe it exists. I’ve never been to either place but I have no doubt they are real.

And just like places closer to home, e.g., the north and south poles or the top of Mt. Everest, I have never been to or touched these places but I do believe the people who’ve been there and taken the pics.

Well, heaven is just like these locations. I haven’t been there yet either but others have and some have told us about it. The most recent case was four year old Colton Burpo whose story was told in Heaven Is For Real. Colton told the story and his father, Todd, did the writing.

Colton, however, wasn’t the first to talk about visiting heaven. The Bible mentions several who had similar experiences:

  • Jesus came down from heaven and returned to heaven and while here He referred to it often.
  • Paul, in one of his near death experiences visited heaven.
  • John, who wrote the Book of Revelation, was transported to heaven and described a number of things he saw there.
  • Stephen had a vision of heaven while being stoned to death.
  • And following the completion of the Bible many martyrs had the same experience.
  • Many others even at the threshold of natural death speak of heavenly visions only they can see.

Going further back in history, the Old Testament tells us:

  • Enoch and Elijah bypassed death and were both transported directly into the presence of God, heaven.
  • Jacob saw angels descending and ascending a ladder that reached down from heaven, implying that it isn’t very far off.
  • Isaiah and Ezekiel both recorded visions of heaven.

So the concept is well established in the Bible and even though it is referred to as the third heaven – the first one being earth’s atmosphere and the second outer space – it obviously is very near. Some have crossed over and come back and several more have seen it.

Heaven is described as having physical dimensions but its proximity isn’t calculated only in geographical terms or hard measurements. It’s much closer than you might think. [Read more…] about Heaven Assumed In The Bible

Book Review: Archeology And The Structure Of Genesis

Ancient records and the structure of Genesis: A case for literary unity by P. J. Wiseman

P. J. Wiseman was neither an archeologist nor a scholar of ancient languages but he was a keen observer, an avid reader and a diligent Bible student. These qualities and the fact that he was stationed in close proximity to live Middle Eastern archeological digs in the 1920’s and 30’s made him a reliable source for some thought provoking ideas about the structure and composition of Genesis.

Prior to any real knowledge of ancient literary methods, in fact, at a time when scholars weren’t convinced that any type of writing was done much before the 1st millennium BC, the compilation of Genesis was surmised only through subjective reflection on the text alone. The result was a variety of theories involving several different and unconnected sources – named by the letters J, E, D and P – none of which are substantiated by copies of any kind. Evangelizing the Religiously Hardened

Jesus Breaks Sabbath Law
John 5

Jesus was not a religionist!

His spiritual devotions never involved habitual ceremony. He prescribed no rituals and there was nothing routine with His words or actions. Some responded to Him angrily, none yawned.

Any rituals He may have followed are not recorded for us. If anything, Jesus was religiously unpredictable.

  • He traveled to Jerusalem on many occasions but not once are we told He offered any sacrifices. He did, on the very odd occasion, tell someone to offer an appropriate sacrifice (Matthew 8:4) but we have no record of Him blessing those ceremonies with His presence.
  • Many of the things Jesus did and much of what He said was religiously disruptive: cleansing the Temple (once in John 2, a second time in Matthew 21*), claiming to be Messiah in the synagogue of Nazareth (Luke 4) and healing on the Sabbath (John 5).
  • The people about whom He spoke His harshest words, the Pharisees, were excessively religious (Matthew 23).
  • It was the ultra religious who were the most instrumental in his execution (Mark 15:1-15).
  • Jesus rarely encouraged anyone to be religious.  He spoke of disciples as sacrificial not ritualistic.
  • Jesus evangelized the religiously hardened and did so by being religiously agitating.

I wouldn’t say that Jesus was anti-religion but I would say that He had no tolerance for religious nonsense. [Read more…] about Evangelizing the Religiously Hardened

Evangelizing The Antagonistic

June 11, 2010 by EnnisP 1 Comment

Lessons From Samaria – John 4

Christians talk a lot about evangelism. It is a primary topic. You aren’t living Christian if you aren’t evangelizing but popular efforts to evangelize don’t compare closely to Jesus’ results or His words. According to Him numbers do count (no pun intended).

Herein is my Father glorified, that you bear MUCH fruit; so shall you be my disciples.  John 15:8

No fruit, little fruit or occasional fruit equals no discipleship. Fruit is the acid test of your discipleship and lip service brings no glory to God.

By the way, personal growth and character development, which are types of fruit, are not what Jesus had in mind here. A few verses later He said…

I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit… (v. 16)

Very similar to:

  • Go and make disciples… Matt. 28:19
  • Go into all the world… Mark 16:15
  • Preach in every nation… Luke 24:47
  • I send you to remit sins… John 20:21 & 23
  • Be witnesses to the uttermost… Acts 1:8

And you don’t have to be sophisticated to be effective. Knowledgeable disciples are NOT more likely to bear fruit than beginners. The fact is God can use anyone anywhere to reach souls. I got saved when a lost person – my best friend – shared just a piece of salvation truth – all he knew. One thing he mentioned was hell. I was so concerned I had to learn more.

God used a lost man to bring me to salvation. Go figure. The most important qualities for an evangelist are humility and vulnerability. Jesus modeled both.

Besides, personal growth should happen concurrently while bringing others to Christ. Evangelism and growth catalyze each other. If one is NOT happening neither is the other. If one IS happening so is the other. [Read more…] about Evangelizing The Antagonistic
