Book Review: “59 Seconds” by R. Wiseman

September 28, 2010 by EnnisP

In, 59 Seconds: Think a Little, Change a Lot, Richard Wiseman becomes England’s version of Malcolm Gladwell in somewhat of an abbreviated format. When challenged by a friend to come up with self help concepts that could be digested and/or applied in a minute he accepted and “:59 Seconds” is the outcome.

Although 329 pages long the book is well formatted, very easy to read and blows away mind myths that have plagued or confused us for decades…centuries…forever. Concise and clear, the book is not easy to put down.

And the book is not thin on substance. Referencing 1000’s of academic studies from many different internationally recognized educational institutions, Richard convincingly corrects culturally fixed but errant ideas regarding ten very important human issues: [Read more…] about Book Review: “59 Seconds” by R. Book Review: 9 Things You MUST DO, by Dr. Henry Cloud

Don’t Feel Good
Feel Better

Success doesn’t come by accident or luck and isn’t limited to a select few, but is rather the outcome of things you consciously do.

That is exactly the point Dr. Henry Cloud makes in his book, 9 Things You Simply MUST DO to Succeed in Love and Life.

In the book he discusses nine characteristics of successful people and clearly shows that any person willing to make the effort consistently can succeed.

Although some of the chapter titles seem a bit cryptic, Dr. Cloud includes a large number of illustrations from his background, both professional and personal, to clarify each one.

Being a psychologist he brings a wealth of knowledge from the experience of guiding many people through their sticking points.

Being a businessman he shares observations gained from both his winning and losing moments.

Some points will surprise you: Pull The Tooth, Hate Well, Don’t Play Fair and Upset The Right People but all of them are relieving. It isn’t a feel good manual but definitely one that will help you feel better, eventually, and generally get more out of life. The nine things are: [Read more…] about Book Review: 9 Things You MUST DO, by Dr. Henry Cloud

Book Review: Archeology And The Structure Of Genesis

Ancient records and the structure of Genesis: A case for literary unity by P. J. Wiseman

P. J. Wiseman was neither an archeologist nor a scholar of ancient languages but he was a keen observer, an avid reader and a diligent Bible student. These qualities and the fact that he was stationed in close proximity to live Middle Eastern archeological digs in the 1920’s and 30’s made him a reliable source for some thought provoking ideas about the structure and composition of Genesis.

Prior to any real knowledge of ancient literary methods, in fact, at a time when scholars weren’t convinced that any type of writing was done much before the 1st millennium BC, the compilation of Genesis was surmised only through subjective reflection on the text alone. The result was a variety of theories involving several different and unconnected sources – named by the letters J, E, D and P – none of which are substantiated by copies of any kind. “Jesus Manifesto” by Sweet and Viola

June 16, 2010 by EnnisP Leave a Comment

Have you ever wondered why there are so many different Christian religions? Have you ever tried to put a finger on the differences and, if so, could you explain the what and why of each one? Do you find the many different types of theologies and the endless versions of each confusing?

If these questions leave you scratching your head join the crowd.

I doubt anyone is brave enough to suggest they have all the answers and since “religion” is not static the answers are always changing anyway. The more time Christian history consumes the more varieties there are that develop.

If these questions plague you like they do so many others then “Jesus Manifesto” is the book you need to read next. [Read more…] about “Jesus Manifesto” by Sweet and Viola

“Financial Peace” by Dave Ramsey

June 2, 2010 by EnnisP 2 Comments

Did you know that most Americans retire on an annual income below $10,000? Better yet, do you know why? If you can’t answer the question not too worry. Dave Ramsey’s book, “Financial Peace,” explains why this happens and tells us how to avoid landing on the wrong side of that statistic.

Financial Peace is a reference book, how-to book and biography all in one. Ramsey gives financial advice based on his personal experience instead of what he learned in a classroom. It’s the best “school of hard knocks” book around and his approach has proven so useful to so many that he presently conducts a nationally syndicated daily call-in radio program, regular seminars and a twelve week training program (Financial Peace University) all dedicated to financial health.

But it wasn’t always great for Dave.

Ramsey was on top of the world or so it seemed before going bankrupt at the age of 26. Following popular trends he used borrowed money to invest in more than $4 million worth of Nashville, TN real estate only to realize that unexpected events can change everything. He learned that “high on the hog” can be synonymous with “brink of disaster.” Jaquars, designer suits and even a good name didn’t help much when the banks called in his loans.
