“Emotional Intelligence” by Daniel Goleman

May 25, 2010 by EnnisP Leave a Comment

Emotional Intelligence is a must read for every parent. It speaks to an area of human development that has huge implications for personal health, relationship happiness and success in business (what every parent wants for their children).

Emotional issues, however, have been mostly ignored up until recent history and current research is scattered here and yon. Goleman brings all the relevant information together in one source and makes the point that emotional health is not only imperative it is possible for all.

The good news is, the information is useful for every person at any stage in life. Whether your children are young adults or prenatal it’s never too late or early. Even older adults have something to gain from this read.

Goleman does what hasn’t been done before, associating intelligence with emotion and suggesting that this kind of smarts is as important, if not more, than the academic kind. In fact, he sites studies that suggest the difference between success and failure has more to do with emotional intelligence (EQ) than it does with IQ. That is actually the opening argument of the book, “Why it (EQ) can matter more than IQ.” [Read more…] about “Emotional Intelligence” by Daniel Goleman

Book Review: “Father Joe”

March 15, 2010 by EnnisP Leave a Comment

Father Joe is a religious book with a very human side, a biography of sorts whose main character comes in late and only dots the printed landscape intermittently but is the one person who makes the story worth reading slowly and more than once.

If you are denominationally minded but disenchanted by sectarianism you will love this book. If you are on the outside religiously but maintain a distant interest, you’ll find Father Joe compelling. He gives new hope to those still looking. He clarifies the issues, brightens the image of religion and puts a human, yet truthful face on truth.

He’s universal. Whatever your background you will relate to Father Joe.

This book illustrates the difficulties of combining divine and human realities. In true satirical manner the technicalities of Christian theology is juxtaposed with human frailty demonstrating the discord between the two but without the insult.

Lots of humor and very entertaining – at times Monty Python-ish – but mostly an honest, sometimes humble look at the struggle to mesh bare truth with experience. Although written from a Catholic perspective, verities embraced by all Christians are featured: selfishness is sinful, forgiveness is needed, penance has many forms, sex is a healthy reality and so on. “The Future of Management” by Gary Hamel

November 20, 2009 by EnnisP Leave a Comment

Normally, “management” wouldn’t be listed as one of the top ten most exciting topics to discuss on a blog but it deserves a hearing here because Gary Hamel does something revolutionary with the subject.  He dismantles everything we have been taught on the issue and begins building again from the ground up (a perspective that really comes alive in the text).

The Future of Management is not about best business practices or the best use of traditional management styles – booooring.  It is about being innovative and adaptable, instead of traditional, to keep pace with new technology and meet the changing demands of market morphings.

Gary’s writing is aimed mostly at commercial organizations but the principles are universal.  They can be applied to any group of organized individuals: schools, government or even church, and the truth is, they all need to rethink how they operate.

Today’s world will be obsolete in a couple of years, at most, and for businesses to successfully survive the change – or anyone else for that matter – they will need to develop processes that are highly tuned to grass roots developments, in real time, and have the agility to respond as required.  If these ideas leave you incredulous watch the video. THE BLIND SIDE, by Michael Lewis

November 16, 2009 by EnnisP 4 Comments

If you enjoy real life stories about individuals improving themselves against great odds then you’ll love this book.

Mr. Lewis tells the story of a young African-American boy, Michael Oher (pronounced “oar”), born in the worst section of Memphis, TN into one of its most dysfunctional homes as he makes the gargantuan leap from the arm-locking embrace of disadvantage to celebrity. The book also gives witness to the fact that these transformations don’t happen easily. It takes the will power, resolve, love, interest and effort of every possible person you can imagine and some good fortune too.

Born to a drug-addicted mother, Michael bounces in and out of school and various hideouts in an attempt to avoid foster care, which was more oppressive than the gang infested housing development he managed to surivive, for the better part of his first sixteen years of his life. Is Science Acting Like Religion?

April 16, 2009 by EnnisP 2 Comments

Philosophy is an area of study which confuses many but intrigues us all. If you have ever read a philosophy book you know exactly what I mean. The popular definition of philosophy is “the love of wisdom” (not knowledge) which is really more vague than clarifying but The Free Dictionary helps us out with a very thorough definition, a portion of which follows: Philosophy is…

The critical analysis of fundamental assumptions or beliefs

That is to say, philosophers tediously discuss ideas that can’t be proven true or false. They target your “beliefs” (faith) about the fundamental issues of life and focus on questions like these:

  • Where did we come from?
  • How did we get here?
  • How do we exist?
  • What are thoughts made of?
  • What constitutes morality?
